The four "W"-Questions

Who:

  • Candida (33-years-old) who is married to Morell
  • Priest James Morell who loves his wife endlessly, she is the most important person in his life
  • Poet Eugene Marchbank (18-years-old) who is also in love with Candida

    When:

  • The story takes place at the end of the 19th century
  • The play Candida was written in 1895

    Where:

  • The story takes place in Morell’s house

    What:

  • Morell and Marchbank argue who is the "right" husband for Candida who can fullfill her expectations
  • They want Candida to choose one of them
  • Both try to convince Candida that he is the right one
  • In the end Candida decides to stay with her weak husband because he needs her so much that he cannot live without her
  • Marchbank is very disappointed and leaves the house
