3.) How does Henry’s mother react to his opinion of soldiering ? (p. 279, no 3)
At first the mother is against her son‘s plan to enlist for the Army.
And after he enlisted she still disappoints him by pretending to be not
interested in his future. But finally she advises him to be careful and
to follow his superiors’ instructions. In this part she shows a typical
motherly behaviour. This becomes obvious when she tells him to care about
his clothes.
6.) How does Henry feel about the battle that is rumoured will take place ? (p. 279, no 6)
After Henry enlisted for the Army he feels very self-confident and he
is looking forward to fighting as a real soldier. But this perspective
changes when he is lying on the battle field. He can hear the sounds of
a nearby battle. This worries him so much that he thinks about deserting.
Only his comrades can reassure him to go all the way and fight.
