Historical flashback

The GDR had been founded in 1949 as a consequence of World War 2 . Germany had lost the war and it had been divided among the Allied Forces. West Germany was controlled by the USA, Great Britain and France whereas East Germany had come under the control of the Soviet Union. The sectors in the west of Germany ceased to exist after some years. In the east, however, a new country came into existence. The GDR was born. From now on Germany was divided into East & West. This division was cemented by the so-called Iron Curtain. From now on nobody was allowed to travel from East to West without a certain permission.

  • 1956 : Uproar of workers in Hungary against their regime. Soviet tanks moved in knocking down the demonstrations.
  • 1968 : Prague-Spring: The development towards more democracy was also crushed by Soviet tanks and the old regime was restored.

    Ten years after

    Germany has been reunited since 3rd of October 1990. The five new states have recovered from 40 years of communist dictatorship and yet the economic situation needs to be improved still.

  • Biggest problem : high unemployment ( 17 % East / 10 % West ) is one of the most difficult challenges today.
