General Information on Cloning
Essentials at a glance
A clone is an organism, or group of organisms, derived from another organism by an nonsexual reproductive process. The word clone belongs to cells and organisms, because a group of cells from only one cell is also called a clone. The members of a clone have equal genetic codes which determine their genetic assessment. Identical twins, for instance, who arise from the division of one fertilized egg, are also called clones. Twins which are nonidentical can not be called clones.
There are also a lot of other organisms which reproduce themselves by cloning. The bacteria, for example, is able to produce a clone by dividing itself. The scientists are so successful that they are now able to isolate an special gene (or group of genes ) from one organism and grow it in a species which is completely different. The recipient must be able to reproduce itself nonsexual. A bacteria, for instance, is able to reproduce itself rapidly. That is the reason why they can be used for the copies of particular genes. These genes can be removed and used for study. This method is called cloning, because scientists use clones of organisms or cells. The method of cloning Dolly was much more complicated. After Dolly was created, scientists all over the world started discussing about human cloning which is still a controversial issue. Cloning can also be used to create genetically altered animals who would be able to support major organs for surgical transplantation into human beings.
